Manchester United have responded to suggestions that they could look to re-sign Napoli midfielder Scott McTominay.

Ever since the Scotland international departed Old Trafford, rumours have swirled that he could one day return to his boyhood club. This speculation was fuelled by his exceptional performances, which quickly made Man Utd regret selling him in the first place.

However, the Premier League side insisted that their hand was forced due to financial regulations. Ultimately, Man Utd’s loss has been Napoli’s gain, as McTominay was named Serie A’s MVP after firing them to the Scudetto last term.

He has again impressed this time around, albeit Napoli are a far cry from the dominant side they were a year ago. With the summer approaching, McTominay is once again being linked with a return to Man Utd.

Meanwhile, Napoli are trying to dispel the speculation once and for all by handing McTominay a new contract with a significant pay increase to reward him for his exceptional performances.

Man Utd respond to McTominay rumours

Speaking last week, McTominay bluntly dismissed suggestions that he could leave Naples anytime soon, insisting that his agent has spoken to no suitors and that Napoli is the only thing on his mind. “My agent hasn’t spoken to anyone about my future,” he said.

“He only talks to the club and me. He hasn’t said anything to the newspapers. I’m extremely happy here, and as for me, I’m a Napoli player. That’s all I think about. The future is very important, and I could see myself at Napoli for a long time.”

Similarly, Man Utd sources are downplaying claims that a McTominay return was ever a realistic possibility, according to TEAMtalk. The Red Devils have “firmly distanced themselves” from these assertions.

The 29-year-old is not one of the names under consideration for Man Utd’s midfield rebuild, and there has been no contact with his camp whatsoever. His name has not even come up during internal discussions.

McTominay will likely extend his Napoli contract, with an agreement between the two parties thought to be close.
