Manchester United have been put on alert by reports that Marseille were ready to part ways with Mason Greenwood after concerns over his commitment and work rate.
Greenwood has been a star player for Marseille since joining them from United with the already scoring 47 goals in less than two years with the French side.
However, according to La Provence, Marseille sporting director Medhi Benatia had been keen on selling Greenwood after his first season with the club due to question marks over his attitude.
The report claims that Greenwood avoided Benatia around the club, while his lack of effort defensively was also considered an issue by the sporting director and reaffirmed by then-manager Roberto de Zerbi.
The situation saw Greenwood dropped by De Zerbi for two matches in March last year and a public call by the Italian to ‘do more’ and ‘sacrifice’ himself for the team.
Greenwood was eventually reintegrated to Marseille’s team, while De Zerbi left Marseille last month, although question marks still remain over the forward despite his form.
Man Utd hoping from lucrative transfer bonus from Greenwood sell-on
Man Utd will be paying close attention to Greenwood’s future knowing that they stand to benefit if the 24-year-old is sold and net a reported 50% of any fee due to a sell-on clause from his €26 million move in 2024.
The deal was structured that way after Greenwood’s career in England ended following his charges for rape and coercive behaviour in 2022, which were eventually dropped.
Greenwood was once marketed as a once-in-a-generation prospect from United’s academy and touted for a €100m-plus valuation before his momentum was halted due to his arrest in January 2022.
Consequently, Greenwood’s value plummeted and he was forced to rebuild his career outside of England, first on loan with Getafe before his move to Marseille, which prompted United to sell him for a cut-price fee with the added caveat of the lucrative sell-on.
With his contract expiring in 2029, it remains to be seen whether Greenwood continues with Marseille this summer or whether they cash in and potentially hand United a substantial bonus to their transfer budget in the process if he is sold for anywhere close to his €44m Estimated Transfer Value (ETV.)
