Manchester United are ‘seriously considering’ re-signing Alvaro Carreras, according to a report.

The Red Devils are desperately scrambling to add a left wing-back to Ruben Amorim’s team after the Portuguese identified that part of the field as his side’s biggest problem position.

Over the past week, Man Utd have been in quite public talks with Serie A side Lecce over Patrick Dorgu. Man Utd have met with their counterparts in Milan to discuss a deal and they have tabled at least two formal offers.

Their first bid clocked in at around €27 million, while the subsequent proposal was worth around €30m-€34m, which is still a little short of Lecce’s €40m valuation.

Man Utd don’t have a lot of money to spend this month due to concerns over Profit and Sustainability Rules, so this would be a massive outlay on the 20-year-old and it would have to be paid for by outgoings.

Man Utd consider Dorgu alternative

As talks with Lecce are proving complicated, Man Utd are starting to give serious consideration to a potential alternative, according to ESPN. The player in question is Alvaro Carreras, who joined Benfica from Man Utd permanently in the summer.

However, the Red Devils secured a buy-back clause in the deal and could re-sign the Spaniard for around €18m. Previous manager Erik ten Hag already confirmed in late 2024 that Man Utd were paying close attention to his development in Lisbon.

Carreras has been a standout performer for Benfica this season and he would be a much cheaper and less complicated alternative to Dorgu, although he is not as versatile as the Dane.

Dorgu has primarily played as a right-winger this season and could, therefore, also deputise further forward, which certainly appeals to a Man Utd side that are currently in talks to offload several wide players like Antony, Marcus Rashford and Alejandro Garnacho.
