That is according to Fichajes, who report that United are working on a deal for 34-year-old defender Nacho.

The centre back sees his contract at Real Madrid expire at the end of the season and the Blancos have decided against renewing.

This means that Nacho is available on a free transfer and Fichajes reports that United are in talks to bring him to Old Trafford.

United are in the market for at least one centre back – possibly two this summer – as both Raphael Varane and Jonny Evans are set to leave on a free transfer when their contracts expire.

The decision to go for Nacho will not be popular with some United fans, who have seen the club burned already when signing experienced yet aging Real Madrid legends.

United signed Varane and Casemiro from Real Madrid in recent years, but both players have failed to match their performances in Spain in the Premier League.

Varane has often been injured since joining in 2021 but even when he has played his levels have not been high.

Casemiro also could depart United this summer – just two years after arriving in a €70 million deal – if they are able to find a buyer for him

With Nacho already 34, there are concerns that he could also be past his best now.

Nacho at Real Madrid

Nacho was born in Madrid and grew up in the Real Madrid youth academy.

He made his first team debut in the 2010-11 season and has since gone on to make 355 appearances for the club, scoring 16 goals.

For most of his time at Madrid, Nacho has been a backup or rotation player but his reliability and availability means he has still racked up a huge number of games.

A utility player, Nacho can play all across the backline but his main position is in the centre of defence.

He has won three La Liga titles and five Champions League trophies during his time at Madrid.

Nacho has also been capped 24 times by Spain, scoring one goal.
