Manchester United have left Trabzonspor officials bemused with their asking price for Andre Onana, vice-president Zeyyat Kafkas has revealed.

The Cameroon international sealed a last-minute move to Turkey last summer after losing his starting spot, first to Altay Bayindir, then to new signing Senne Lammens.

Onana was a €50 million investment in 2023, but he failed to live up to his price tag at Old Trafford. Numerous high-profile errors made his position between the sticks untenable.

It initially looked as though Onana would nevertheless remain at Man Utd, but when it became clear that he would spend the season primarily on the bench – or even in the stands – he agreed to join Trabzonspor on loan.

The Turkish side do not have a purchase option or obligation, which means that the 29-year-old will return to Man Utd in the summer. It was thought that Trabzonspor could maybe try to negotiate a permanent deal with Man Utd, but vice-president Kafkas has now confirmed that this won’t happen.

Man Utd want €50 million for Onana

Kafkas claims that Onana has his heart set on a move either within England or to a top European league. That is not even the most prohibitive aspect as far as Trabzonspor are concerned, however. The bigger issue is that Man Utd have set a frankly ridiculous asking price.

The vice-president asserts that Man Utd are demanding up to €50m for Onana, which naturally makes a move to Trabzonspor impossible. Such a fee is also completely detached from reality, with the player’s Estimated Transfer Value (ETV) currently standing at just €16m.

“The price offered by Man Utd for Onana’s purchase was in the €45m-€50m range, and our president politely informed the club about the realities of Trabzonspor,” Kafkas said, referring to club president Ertugrul Dogan stating earlier this season that a permanent transfer is unlikely.

“I don’t think this information affected Onana at all because his intention is to continue playing for a club in Europe, if not in England. His family also thinks this way. The president wanted to explain the realities of Trabzonspor. However, if the circumstances change, the situation could change.”
