Manchester United staff members are reportedly “gobsmacked” that Ruben Amorim remains in charge at Old Trafford following his extremely underwhelming start to life with the Red Devils.

Amorim’s side were beaten 3-0 by arch-rivals Manchester City on Sunday afternoon to leave them languishing down in 14th place in the Premier League table after four fixtures in 2025-26.

Man Utd have only picked up 31 league points since Amorim became the new permanent manager at Old Trafford in November – the lowest of any ever-present Premier League club during that time – and rumours suggest he could be the next English top flight manager to be sacked.

INEOS are set to retain faith with Amorim for the time being, however this has come to the immense shock of several members of backroom staff at Old Trafford.

That is according to TEAMtalk, who claim that Man Utd insiders are “gobsmacked” that Amorim is still the club’s head coach.

Many staff members reportedly believe the board are being far too lenient with the former Sporting CP boss and are growing increasingly frustrated with his lack of tactical flexibility.

Who could replace Ruben Amorim at Man Utd?

Although Amorim currently appears to have the full support of the Man Utd hierarchy, he could find himself out of job if results fail to improve soon.

If he is sacked, Man Utd will be forced to find another new head coach and a number of options have emerged as the most likely candidates to replace Amorim.

Crystal Palace boss Oliver Glasner is the current favourite to take over at Old Trafford, while free agents Gareth Southgate, Michael Carrick, Nuno Espirito Santo and Xavi are all high-calibre options.

In addition, the bookies also believe that Unai Emery, Julian Nagelsmann, Mauricio Pochettino and Edin Terzic are strong candidates to replace Amorim. Former Man Utd managers Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Jose Mourinho could even return to Old Trafford following their recent sackings by Besiktas and Fenerbahce respectively.
