It is looking increasingly unlikely that Manchester United will be able to sign a first-team left-back this month.

One of the first problem positions identified by new head coach Ruben Amorim when he came on board was the left side of the defence. It is a position that has repeatedly caused the club headaches in recent seasons due to the fitness problems of Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia.

While Malacia is fit again, it seems doubtful that he will be a long-term option for the Red Devils. Indeed, Fabrizio Romano confirmed on Monday that Man Utd are willing to listen to offers, temporary and permanent, this month.

Also on Monday, young left-back Diego Leon underwent his medical and signed his Man Utd contract. However, the 17-year-old Paraguayan can only join up with the club in the summer after turning 18 and he is firmly viewed as one for the future rather than an immediate upgrade.

As such, Man Utd continue to scour the left-back market and have earmarked a host of potential options. The problem? Seemingly none of them are available this month.

Man Utd set for left-back frustration

For a few weeks now, it has been known that Alphonso Davies is close to extending his Bayern Munich contract, while last week, Italian media began reporting that Theo Hernandez is on the verge of signing fresh terms with AC Milan.

Now, GIVEMESPORT claims that Man Utd will also face frustration in pursuit of Bournemouth star Milos Kerkez, with the Cherries remaining firm in their stance that he is not for sale this month.

Additionally, CaughtOffside states that Man Utd have yet to firm up their interest in versatile Lecce man Patrick Dorgu, which means that they could be beaten to the punch by other suitors.

Last week, Italian media reported that Napoli had agreed a deal in principle to sign the young Dane, while the above-mentioned report speaks of interest from Chelsea, Liverpool and a host of other clubs.
