The Daily Mail reports that United have made the Brazilian star their top target for the midfield in 2026.

United’s main priority in the transfer market is to sign a top central midfielder.

The centre of the park has been a problem area for United for a number of years now.

United have shortlisted a host of central midfielders, including Brighton’s Carlos Baleba, Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton and Nottingham Forest’s Elliot Anderson.

United tried to sign Baleba in the summer and this January have been considering the Ecuadorian again, along with Wharton and Anderson.

Joao Gomes is Man Utd top target

But the Mail reports that Gomes has now become United’s first-choice option to bolster their midfield.

The 24-year-old has been one of the Premier League’s best-performing midfielders since joining Wolves from Flamengo in January 2023.

Gomes is known for his defensive qualities, his tackling and running, shielding the Wolves defence excellently.

United will lose their best defensive midfielder in 2026 as Casemiro’s contract expires at the end of the season and he will not sign a new deal.

Manuel Ugarte has struggled since his move from PSG and will likely be sold next summer.

Gomes’ contract at Wolves expires in 2028 and he will not come cheap as the club are under no pressure to sell.
