Manchester United have been offered the chance to reignite their interest in Morten Hjulmand as Sporting CP have resigned themselves to the fact that he will depart this summer, according to Portuguese media.

The Denmark international was made the captain of the Lisbon giants by former Red Devils head coach Ruben Amorim, and the 41-year-old showed a keen interest in reuniting with the midfielder at Old Trafford.

Amorim, who previously described Hjulmand as more complete than his Sporting predecessors Joao Palhinha and Manuel Ugarte, targeted the 26-year-old last summer. However, as exclusively detailed on The Transfers Podcast at the time, the Portuguese club refused to sanction his exit.

Sporting had already lost Viktor Gyokeres and insisted that they would not sell any other key players. To sign him, Man Utd would have had to pay Hjulmand’s €80 million release clause, which they were not prepared to do.

Heading into this summer, however, the situation will be radically different. Indeed, A Bola reports that Sporting are already scouring the market for a suitable successor to their captain because they believe a transfer is inevitable.

Hjulmand to leave Sporting

This is unsurprising, considering that Sergio Krithinas recently revealed on The Transfers Podcast that Sporting will not stand in Hjulmand’s way if a suitable offer arrives this summer.

The club appreciate that the Dane did not agitate for a move last summer and have a similar agreement with him to the one they had with Viktor Gyokeres, although Sporting famously still made life difficult for Arsenal and the striker in 2025.

The Lisbon side have agreed to sell Hjulmand for less than his release clause. Last summer, when Man Utd showed an interest, the player’s representatives felt that €50m would have been a fair price.

The latest news coming out of Portugal now echoes this. It is reported that Sporting will consider selling for an upfront fee of €40 million plus bonuses, likely taking the final sum to €50m. Everyone involved is keen to avoid a PR disaster like the Gyokeres saga.

Man Utd, of course, remain in the market for midfielders. Their top targets are Elliot Anderson, Carlos Baleba, Adam Wharton and Joao Gomes, but Hjulmand will surely still feature on their shortlist as well, despite the sacking of Amorim.
