Manchester United tried to hijack Liverpool’s pursuit of Jeremy Jacquet on Sunday, according to reputed journalist Florian Plettenberg.

The Red Devils are likely to sign a new centre-back in the summer with Harry Maguire expected to leave when his contract expires on June 30.

United made a late attempt to hijack Liverpool‘s move for Jacquet yesterday, but their move was unsuccessful, as per Plettenberg.

Jacquet had already agreed on personal terms with Liverpool, while Rennes also reached a verbal agreement with the Reds over the fee.

The Premier League holders will pay around £60 million for the highly-rated centre-back, who is dubbed as the new William Saliba.

Jacquet has already travelled to the North West tonight. He will undergo a medical before signing a long-term deal starting next summer.

United viewed Jacquet as a market opportunity and will now need to look elsewhere to bolster their central defence ahead of next season.

Chelsea also missed out on the opportunity to sign him.
