Manchester United are reportedly eyeing-up a move to re-sign former academy starlet Angel Gomes next summer.

Gomes, 24, came through the ranks at United and became their fourth-youngest player of all-time when he made his debut aged 16 years and 263 days in a Premier League game against Crystal Palace in May 2017.

However, Gomes, who joined United at the age of six, struggled to kick on over the next three years, making just 10 appearances in all competitions before he was released in the summer of 2020.

Gomes moved to Lille on a five-year deal and has impressed, with the midfielder breaking into the England squad earlier this season.

The 24-year-old’s contract with the French side expires at the end of the season and there has been no progress with regards to a fresh deal.

And, according to The Sun, United are planning a swoop for Gomes on a free transfer, with the midfielder viewed as one of their major targets for next summer.

New United boss Ruben Amorim is a long-term admirer of Gomes and has backed the move

The report claims that a move for Gomes has the backing of new Red Devils boss Ruben Amorim – who is a long-term admirer – while Dan Ashworth and Jason Wilcox also rate him highly and believe he can be a key cog in the Portuguese’s plans at the club.

Lille have accepted they are likely to lose Gomes on a free and he is able to start speaking to clubs in January and sign a pre-contract agreement.

It is also believed that United are confident Gomes, who grew up in Salford, can be tempted back to the club, with the 24-year-old viewed as a long-term replacement for Casemiro, 32.

Tottenham and Arsenal are also touted with an interest in Gomes but speaking last month, he admitted that United will forever hold a place in his heart.

‘There’ll always be that sentimental soft spot,’ he said. ‘So of course it’d be difficult to say no.’

Meanwhile, back in 2022, Gomes made it clear that he would be keen on a move back to Old Trafford if the situation arose.

‘Do I imagine myself coming back one day? Obviously, it’s home,’ Gomes told French outlet L’Equipe.

‘I would love to come back. But you never know in football. I just have to keep my feet on the ground, and keep playing, making the most of it. I can’t predict what will happen in the future.’

Gomes was also a member of the England Under 21 side under Lee Carsley that won the Euros in 2023, with the midfielder racking up 18 appearances at that level.

After spending his first season with Lille on loan at Boavista in Portugal, Gomes has gone onto play 129 times for the French club, scoring nine goals and adding 19 assists.

He featured once off the bench for the Three Lions in the recent international break, playing the final 11 minutes of their 5-0 thrashing of the Republic of Ireland.

The midfielder will be back in action on Sunday when Lille, who sit fourth in Ligue 1, entertain Rennes.
