Marcus Rashford misses another Barcelona training session as dream put on hold

Marcus Rashford is a major doubt ahead of Barcelona’s Camp Nou return against Athletic Bilbao with the on-loan Manchester United star having missed the Spanish giants’ last two training sessions

Marcus Rashford is going to have to wait to realise his Camp Nou dream with the forward a major doubt ahead of this weekend’s game. Barcelona are set to return to their historical home on Saturday against Athletic Bilbao.

The Camp Nou had previously been undergoing a major renovation since 2023, which led to Barcelona playing matches at the Olympic Stadium. But government officials have now granted the Catalans permission to return.

And while their return is much-anticipated, one man who might not take to the pitch is Rashford. The on-loan Manchester United man missed Barcelona training on Thursday and was again absent for their follow-up session on Friday.

Reports in Spain suggested that he reported to the club’s training ground to seek permission from boss Hansi Flick to be absent once more. It was suggested that Rashford was dealing with a ‘personal issue’.

Flick has now confirmed that Rashford is a doubt due to illness. Speaking in his pre-match press conference, he said: “Marcus has a fever and hasn’t been able to train yesterday or today. I have doubts about him playing tomorrow.

“But the good news is that Raphinha is back, and I really appreciate what he brings to the team. We’ll see tomorrow, but the important thing is that he’s back. He’ll start on the bench, though.”

Should Rashford be sidelined this weekend, it could see his dream of playing at the Camp Nou for Barcelona delayed. Their next game at home comes next weekend against Alaves following an away trip to face Chelsea in the Champions League.

Speaking about his desire to play at the stadium, Rashford said: “It’s a very nice feeling. It’s a beautiful stadium and when it is full it’s going to be unbelievable.

“Camp Nou was always one of my favourite stadiums and one I wanted to play in. But to play on it for Barcelona is going to be a different feeling. I cannot wait to be on the pitch. I will enjoy it.”

On Barcelona’s return, Flick added: “We are all delighted to be back at our stadium. The opponent is obviously very good.

“They are a team that plays in the Champions League, with a lot of quality. It is a very good opportunity to gauge our current situation.”

Rashford has scored six goals in 16 appearances since joining Barcelona.
