Umberto Marino sees a ‘very open contest’ between Atalanta and Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League knockout play-off but feels that La Dea ‘often perform well on stages like this.’

Atalanta have been drawn against Bundesliga giants Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League play-off.

“An environment like Dortmund brings out the best in the team; we often perform well on stages like this,” Marino told Sky Sport via Ansa.

“They are a team with European experience and significant technical quality. You have to give 120% against these top sides.

“The passion that comes through from these clubs is what defines them,” Marino continued.

“This draw is a historic moment. Just look at the first eight teams qualified for the Round of 16 and all the teams that were knocked out. It shows the value of Atalanta’s journey. We are here alongside PSG, Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid.

“We are a young, fresh side, but with experienced players who reached the Europa League Final two years ago. We have to play with determination and the desire to grind out a result and gain that extra year needed to win matches. It will be a very open contest.”

Lastly, Marino commented on the Nerazzurri’s moves in the January window: “Atalanta have built a competitive squad and strengthened further in January. Giacomo Raspadori is an important player, and the ownership’s aim is to keep the team’s level high.
