Optimism is high around Manchester United ahead of Ruben Amorim‘s first game as the club’s new manager but his arrival may not suit everyone.

Former Liverpool defender Mark Lawrenson expects Amorim to inject a new lease of life into a United team who currently sit 13th in the Premier League after 11 rounds of fixtures.

However, Lawrenson does not believe that midfielder Casemiro – who is the top-earner at Old Trafford – has the necessary attributes to thrive in Amorim’s high-pressing style of football.

Speaking ahead of Sunday’s trip to Ipswich Town, Lawrenson told Paddy Power:  ‘I think the whole Manchester United squad will benefit from Ruben Amorim’s arrival.

‘I don’t do stats, but I bet you that all their stats will be better this weekend than they have been [all season]. It’s just one of those things.

‘It’s going to take a while to decide how they’re going to play. He obviously wants to press but they won’t be able to do it straight away because they’re not used to it.

‘You’d look at Casemiro and think that if they’re going to press and get up the field quickly, that won’t be his ideal way of playing and I think he might struggle.

‘He has played better of late, but they’ve got a new manager, and he might decide to drop him because he doesn’t have the legs.’

Casemiro, 32, will make the 100th appearance of his United career if he features at Portman Road on Sunday.

The former Real Madrid star is under contract with United until June 2026 but he could leave before then, with there said to be significant interest from the Saudi Pro League.

United lined up in a 4-2-3-1 formation for the majority of their 128 matches under previous manager Erik ten Hag.

But new boss Amorim prefers a 3-4-3 system.

In addition to their change of shape, United are also expected to play a much higher defensive line.

Despite being short of pace,  Lawrenson believes that Harry Maguire has the potential to be a good fit in United’s new formation.

‘If Harry Maguire knocked on Ruben Amorim’s door, he’ll have a look at him and see what he’s got,’ Lawrenson added.

‘With every player – and there’s lots of them – he has to look at each one, but in the meantime, he must get results.

‘If Harry Maguire plays as the middle of Amorim’s back three, he’ll be comfortable. It’s just that he doesn’t have that half a yard of pace.

‘Amorim might think he can put him in the middle with two guys either side who have legs and see how they go.’

Maguire has played in a back three for much of his international career with England, although often in a deeper defensive line than the one Amorim likes to use.
