Mark Robins eyes FA Cup upset after Championship side Coventry defeat Wolves 3-2 with two stoppage time winners to set up Sky Blues’ Wembley return

Mark Robins believes Coventry have an outside shot at FA Cup glory after they won a quarter-final classic at Wolves to book their place at Wembley next month.

Two injury time goals from Ellis Simms and Haji Wright turned defeat into victory and allowed the Championship club to spring a serious surprise at Molineux.

Simms had given Coventry the lead early in the second half but Wolves led heading into stoppage time thanks to late strikes from Rayan Ait-Nouri and substitute Hugo Bueno. 

But without injured forwards Pedro Neto, Matheus Cunha and Hwang Hee-chan, Wolves could not bring it home and Robins admitted Wolves’ absences had given his side the edge.

‘We’ve got a small chance,’ said Robins. ‘We’re going to Wembley and we are not going to say we are making the numbers up.

‘The levels go up with every round and I am expecting a really tough encounter when we get to Wembley but we’ve got to go and enjoy it. We knew their injuries meant we had a chance.’

Coventry’s last trip to the national stadium ended with defeat on penalties to Luton in the Championship play-off final last May, which cost them a place in the top flight this season.

Wolves boss Gary O’Neil hit out at Robins for his aggressive celebrations towards a ball boy but was also ‘devastated’ that his side came up short as injuries caught up with them.

He said: ‘We are a Premier League club and have only one senior attacking player fit – that makes it tough. It will take me at least the next two weeks to get over this.

‘We can continue to punch above expectation but sometimes your situation catches up with you. I hope when the emotion of how close we were to Wembley dies down, we will realise how well we have done to get where we are. We have 41 points in the league and we were three minutes from an FA Cup semi-final.

‘There needs to be an understanding of our situation but we don’t just accept it and stop. We are going to keep pushing and try to add to our total of 41. Coventry were good enough to capitalise on our situation and they deserved to win.’
