Marseille boss ‘who clashed with Greenwood’ quits club with immediate effect

The turmoil continues at Marseille as former Manchester United forward Mason Greenwood sees his club in disarray

Marseille sporting director Medhi Benatia has resigned from his role amid recent reports of clashes with former Manchester United forward Mason Greenwood.

The Ligue 1 chief has left the club as tensions rise at Marseille during a chaotic period for the club which has seen Roberto De Zerbi leave. De Zerbi left in the aftermath of their 5-0 drubbing to rivals Paris-Saint Germain with the club sitting fourth in the table and in light of missing out on the next stage of the Champions League in dramatic fashion.

Benatia, a former Moroccan international who had a successful playing career including the likes of Bayern Munich, AS Roma and Juventus on his CV, revealed that he left the club with the ongoing problems.

He said in a statement: “Since arriving at the club, I have always acted with heart and a single obsession: to restore Olympique de Marseille to its rightful place. I know this club, I know what it demands and the passion that drives it.

“Today, we are still in the running. The objective of qualifying for the Champions League is clearly within our reach, and we are still in contention to bring the Coupe de France home.

“Despite recent setbacks and some cruel twists of fate, the project is progressing on the pitch, but I cannot ignore the current climate.

“I sense a growing dissatisfaction, a breakdown in communication that I deeply regret. In Marseille, results are the only true measure.

“You know my frankness and transparency. Therefore, given the tensions surrounding the management, I have indeed submitted (not offered) my resignation, because in my opinion, the club will always come before individuals, and I do not want my presence to become an obstacle or a burden to the organisation and its development.

“I leave with the feeling of having done my utmost professionally, but with the regret of not having been able to calm the atmosphere around the team, which, in my opinion, is more than capable of achieving the set objectives.”

It has been reported in recent weeks that Benatia had fallen out with Greenwood. The Englishman has been at the French club since 2024 and has established himself as a key player for the club, and while he was being publicly backed by De Zerbi, it has been reported that Greenwood and Benatia had fallen out.

L’Equipe have stated that the pair would openly ignore each other, while the 38-year-old was said to be a vocal critic of the forward on and off the pitch.

The reports claim that Benatia was said to be angered by Greenwood ignoring commercial responsibilities last summer, with little concern for the consequences.

De Zerbi is now on the managerial scrapheap but it comes at an intriguing period with Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur on the hunt for permanent tacticians in the hot seat.

The Italian has been mooted with the Old Trafford post in the past, and it was the said that he was considered for the United job after impressive work at Brighton, before United opted for Erik ten Hag.
