Mason Greenwood is reportedly being encouraged to consider suing Manchester United following the outcome of Benjamin Mendy‘s case with Manchester City.

Mendy won his legal battle against former club City for the majority of his £11million in unpaid wages while he faced rape charges.

Mendy was cleared of raping a woman at his £4m mansion and trying to rape another woman following a retrial last year. City halted Mendy’s £500,000-a-month salary in 2021 when Mendy was arrested for the second time.

Mendy, who joined City for £49m from Monaco in 2017, responded by taking the Premier League champions to an employment tribunal, and won the fight after making a claim for ‘unauthorised deductions’ from his wages.

Now, according to The Sun, Greenwood is being urged to consider suing United after charges against him were dropped, having initially been charged with attempted rape, assault and controlling and coercive behaviour.

Greenwood is enjoying a fresh start in France with Marseille, having joined the club from United in the summer after a year on loan in Spain with Getafe

He was arrested in January 2022, and suspended by United, not playing for the club after his arrest despite charges being dropped.

A source told The Sun: ‘This is something that has been on the cards ever since criminal charges against Mason were dropped. The club has noted the Mendy case and the potential implications it has for them.

‘But the two cases are fundamentally different. Mendy was suspended without pay by City, whilst Mason was suspended on full pay.

‘If he were to launch legal action it would be for a loss of potential earnings. He was one of the hottest prospects in Europe. His suspension destroyed it all in an instant.’

It is reported that Greenwood’s representatives are unhappy with United’s decision to get rid of him when he joined Getafe.

They also reportedly believe it affected his future earning ability and attractiveness to sponsors.

He was dropped from his Nike sponsorship by Nike in February last year, and, via The Sun, liquidated his imagine rights company. Manchester United offered no comment after being contacted by Mail Sport.

Greenwood is now thought to be on £70,000 a week at Marseille, having been pursued by manager Roberto De Zerbi in the summer.

The Italian relayed his desire to bring in the forward during his first conversation with the board after being appointed as their manager in June.

He made 129 appearances for United, scoring 35 goals before joining Marseille for £30million in the summer.

His potential move to France sparked a backlash from livid Marseille fans, who launched a #GreenwoodNotWelcome campaign when he was initially linked with the club.
