Mauro Icardi was left embarrassed after the Galatasaray forward fired wide of an open goal following a passed penalty in the Turkish Super Lig.

Galatasaray had the chance to take the lead in the 37th minute against Istanbulspor after being awarded a penalty.

Icardi was seen handing the ball to team-mate Kerem Akturkoglu to take the spot-kick.

Akturkoglu deceived David Jensen by opting to roll the penalty to his left for the onrushing Icardi, who had an empty net to aim for after the Danish goalkeeper committed to his dive.

The Galatasaray striker astonishingly fired wide of the target, shocking both his team-mates and manager Okan Buruk, who turned away in disbelief.

Icardi was left embarrassed after firing wide of the target – missing a wide-open goal

Icardi, who has won eight caps for Argentina in his career, placed both hands on his head and was seen smiling ruefully following his glaring miss.

The incident has earned comparisons to famous miss up between Thierry Henry and Robert Pires for Arsenal, after the two stars conspired to miss a pass penalty against Manchester City in 2005.

Dutch great Johan Cruyff was among those to successfully pull off the elaborate penalty routine for Ajax with team-mate Jesper Olsen.

Luis Suarez and Lionel Messi also pulled off the pass penalty for Barcelona back in 2016.

The Argentine responded by scoring the only goal of the match for champions Galatasaray

Icardi’s blushes were somewhat spared when the former PSG forward scored just five minutes after his shocking miss.

The 30-year-old, who scored 23 goals in 26 games during an initial loan at the club last season, fired into the bottom corner after being picked out by Akturkoglu on the edge of the box.

His 10th goal in 11 matches this season helped Galatasaray earn a 1-0 win.

The reigning Turkish champions currently top the table after five wins and one draw in the league this season.
