Metz youth player hospitalised with “severe burns” in Crans Montana fire

Tahirys Dos Santos, a 19-year-old Metz player, is in hospital with “serious burns” after the fire at the Swiss ski resort of Crans Montana on New Year’s Eve.

According to various reports, the Metz defender was celebrating the New Year and after New Year’s Eve dinner he went to the bar Le Constellation, where the tragic fire occurred that left at least 40 dead and a hundred injured.

“FC Metz announces with deep sadness that Tahirys Dos Santos, a youth player at the club, from Mont-Saint-Martin, was injured in the fire in Crans-Montana, Switzerland, on New Year’s Eve. With severe burns, the 19-year-old was airlifted to Germany, where he is currently receiving treatment,” the club said in an official statement.

Her agent, Christophe Hutteau, gave the first assessment of Tahirys Dos Santos’ health. “With Tahirys I couldn’t talk, she couldn’t express herself. I spoke to her parents throughout the day; they kept me informed of her condition.”

Hutteau also left open the possibility that the young player will undergo surgery:“He may need surgery tonight, possibly a transplant. It’s still too early to know more about what will happen”.

The Metz player was accompanied by his girlfriend and friends, as can be seen from the statements of his agent: “The first thing he asked the doctors when he regained consciousness was: ‘Where are my friends?’. His girlfriend is also seriously injured and hospitalized”.

In its official statement, Metz said it “is working with the medical authorities to arrange for him to be transferred to Mercy Hospital, close to his home”.
