Milan transfer recap: revolution for top four

Milan drastically changed the team’s shape in the January transfer window, signing five new players, including Kyle Walker and Santiago Gimenez, and loaning out Alvaro Morata and Ismael Bennacer, among others.

The Rossoneri need a big push to reach a Champions League spot this season as they currently sit 8th in the table, seven points below 4th-placed Lazio, but with a game in hand to be played away at Bologna.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Milan directors reshaped the team in the winter transfer window by signing at least two players who are expected to become immediate starters: Walker at right-back and Gimenez in attack.

The Rossoneri confirmed four of their five new winter signings on the deadline day.

Gimenez joined the Rossoneri on a permanent €32m transfer from Feyenoord, replacing Morata, who signed for Galatasaray on loan with an option to buy.

Monza midfielder Warren Bondo also joined Milan on a permanent €10m transfer from Monza, who welcomed Rossoneri talent Kevin Zeroli on loan.

The other three Milan signings, Walker, Joao Felix and Riccardo Sottil, have moved to San Siro on loan. The Rossoneri have an option to sign both Walker and Sottil at the end of the season, while Joao Felix has completed a dry loan move from Chelsea.

Aside from Morata and Zeroli, Noah Okafor, Davide Calabria and Ismael Bennacer also left San Siro. Calabria joined Bologna on loan, but Milan won’t extend his contract, expiring in June, while Okafor and Bennacer joined Napoli and Marseille, respectively, both on loan with an option to buy.

Transfermarkt estimates that the Rossoneri spent €48.5m in the January window and earned €11.8m from sales.
