MLS club sporting director confirms he was offered Thomas Müller

Philadelphia Union sporting director Ernst Tanner has confirmed that Thomas Müller was offered to the club, but admitted that a deal for the Bayern Munich veteran is not financially viable.

Thomas Müller is still weighing his options after learning that his expiring contract with Bayern Munich will not be renewed.

A move to Major League Soccer is widely considered likely for the 35-year-old, but one of the clubs in the league is now out of the race despite being offered his services.

“I’ve already been offered Thomas Müller. I still have a good relationship with his advisors. But from a financial perspective, that’s absolutely unthinkable for us,” said Philadelphia Union sporting director Ernst Tanner. 

“We’re a development club and operate with one of the league’s smallest budgets. You also have to think about team dynamics – when someone suddenly earns far more than everyone else, people start to wonder why they’re even here.”

Tanner added that he sees Los Angeles FC as the most likely destination for the Bayern legend.

“A big name like Thomas Müller needs to go to a club that suits him. Clubs like Los Angeles, New York, and Inter Miami with Lionel Messi would be possible options.”

“LAFC is Bayern’s partner club. I would be surprised if he didn’t move there. A move to a New York club is just as unsuitable in my opinion as a transfer to Inter Miami.”
