Mo Salah ‘increasingly likely’ to leave Liverpool as Saudi move looms

Mohamed Salah might have made his peace with Liverpool manager Arne Slot following a December outburst, but the Egypt international is “increasingly likely” to leave the club in the summer, according to a BBC Sport report.

FootballTransfers revealed last August that Salah’s plan is to leave Liverpool at the end of the 2025/26 season, yet the issue is one that has exploded into the public domain in recent months.

After being overlooked by Slot in a series of games in which the Anfield club struggled, the 33-year-old claimed that he had been “thrown under a bus” during a rare public interview.

Although Salah is now back in the Liverpool team, the rift that was generated during these difficult weeks appears to have confirmed the player’s eventual exit.

BBC Sport reports that the player is “increasingly likely” to leave the Reds in the summer, having forged a glorious career for himself on Merseyside.

Liverpool, it adds, are unlikely to wish to see Salah leave for nothing when his contract expires in 2027, while his form this term has been below his usual elite standards. He has, after all, only seven goals and eight assists across 28 matches.

This report echoes previous indications from Foot Mercato earlier this month, which claimed that Salah remains frustrated with the overall situation at Liverpool and is ready for a new challenge.

What next for Salah?

The Saudi Pro League is likely to be the Egyptian’s next destination. He has long been earmarked as a marquee signing by the leaders of the big-spending division, and with a fresh influx of stars expected to follow in the summer, Salah is likely to be near the top of their shortlist.

Saudi can offer the attacker an unmatched contract, while he would also go to the Pro League and become its marquee figure, overtaking even Cristiano Ronaldo in popularity with the locals.

Al-Ittihad have reportedly opened concrete transfer talks with Salah’s agent, Ramy Abbs, with the Pro League champions eager to make him the crown jewel of a new-look team.

Saudi transfer expert Ben Jacobs revealed in December that Salah could earn up to €200 million per year should he make the move to the Pro League, where Al-Hilal, NEOM SC and Al-Qadsiah were all interested in a January deal for the player.

MLS is another possible destination for Salah, though American clubs cannot offer him either the same wage packet or commercial opportunities that he would be presented with in Saudi.
