Former Liverpool forward Stan Collymore believes that Alexander Isak could reject a summer move to Anfield if Mohamed Salah signs a contract extension at the club.

Salah, 32, is due to become a free agent when his current deal expires at the end of June and he has been widely tipped to secure a lucrative contract in the Saudi Pro League this summer.

However, Liverpool are confident that he will extend his stay at the club, as per multiple reports, although Salah could have an indirect impact on the Reds’ pursuit of Isak.

The Sweden international has been identified as one of Liverpool’s preferred candidates to replace Darwin Nunez later this year, and they are set to battle both Arsenal and Chelsea for his signature when the 2025 summer transfer window opens.

But, Collymore believes that Salah’s presence could dissuade Isak from moving to Anfield.

What has Stan Collymore said about Alexander Isak?

“I think any top club would want Alexander Isak,” Collymore told CaughtOffside.

“Isak would be a sensational fit for Liverpool, as they do not have a proper clinical striker. However, there is an argument that he would not fit in as well as other places because he would not be the main man in terms of goalscoring – that would still be Mo Salah.

“He could easily suffer if he moved to Anfield because of this. In a football team, there is typically one dominant goalscorer, and a couple of others weigh in too, but Isak would not want to be the latter.

“I don’t think you get two players that can score 30-35 goals a season if Isak and Salah are paired together. Football does not work like that, and if Isak sees himself as playing second fiddle, he could have doubts.”

Collymore added: “Regardless, I think he [Isak] stays at Newcastle for at least one more season if they qualify for the Champions League come May, especially as he is already loved there, and he has played around him that get the best out of him.”

FootballTransfers understands that Isak is open to signing a new contract at Newcastle, although we have been told that he is eager for a release clause to be included in order to ensure a transfer away from the club is possible in the future.
