Chelsea’s Moises Caicedo won acclaim for his tireless performance as Enzo Maresca’s side won 1-0 against Tottenham in the Premier League on Saturday.

The Ecuador international star was busy throughout the clash and played a decisive role in Joao Pedro’s winning goal, harassing and haranguing the Spurs defence into coughing up the ball in a dangerous area before setting up his team-mate.

Caicedo was unanimously hailed as the man of the match, with Sky Sports pundit Jamie Redknapp listing seven reasons why the former Brighton man is currently at the peak of the game.

“I’d go as far to say that right now, he’s the best midfielder of his type in the world right now – the way that he covers ground, his desire, that quality on the ball, putting out fires for his team-mates, chasing lost causes, strength on the ball, always making the right pass,” the former Liverpool midfielder said.

“I just thought he was magnificent today. As a defender, when you’ve got someone like that just hoovering up in front of you, it’s an absolute dream.

“He took a little while to settle, but now I’m beginning to think that he’s one of the best. They’ve had N’Golo Kante, Claude Makelele, some of the best defensive midfield players at that club. Absolutely magnificent in every department. If you’re going to win top competitions, you need this type of player.”

Caicedo is a player with everything – Sturridge

Daniel Sturridge, a Premier League winner with Chelsea, backed this viewpoint, stating that Caicedo is now living up to the hype of his €116 million transfer fee.

“When you look at him and see the talent this player has, the level he’s reaching is where the money they paid for him, it matches up now. At the start, the first season, we were probably looking at him and thinking: ‘Is he going to fulfil his potential?’ At this point in time, the realisation is that he’s getting close to the maximum level he’s going to be. He’s 24 tomorrow [Sunday] so we’re looking at a player who can still improve,” he said.

“This season, we’re seeing a man whose stepping onto the pitch knowing what’s expected of him, knowing what he’s capable of. He’s got the technical attributes to know that if he needs to score a goal, he can score a goal. He breaks up the play. He’s got everything. There’s nothing I can point to and say: ‘You don’t have that.’”

Caicedo is liable to be in Champions League action for Chelsea when they face Qarabag away on Wednesday.
