Borussia Dortmund manager Niko Kovač was full of praise for his side following their 3-0 victory over Union Berlin, emphasizing that adaptability, physicality, and team mentality were central to the win.
“We usually play with three forwards, but today we needed more players in midfield,” Kovac said, noting the team’s tactical response to Union’s style.
“It was a great reaction from the squad after the game against Tottenham. Physically, we matched them and earned our luck in front of goal. It wasn’t a beautiful game, of course not – it’s cold, and the opponent plays long balls. If we had tried to play pretty football today, it would have gone badly. It’s about results, and today we got exactly that – a good result. I’m very satisfied.”
Kovač also addressed Nico Schlotterbeck’s return to his best form after six months out with injury. “Of course I wanted to use him carefully at first. Now he’s fully fit and go wherever he’s needed in the game: in attack for corners and in the back as our last defender. As a coach, you have to make important decisions, and that was the case with Schlotti in attack when he came back from injury.”
He also commented on Schlotterbeck’s imminent decision on his future: “We all want him to stay; the club will do everything to keep him, but ultimately he must decide. My feeling is positive. He’s an identification figure here at Dortmund.”
The coach highlighted the physical approach Dortmund took against Union. “We accepted the fight today. More fight than finesse was required, and the players delivered.”
Kovač also praised Emre Can’s leadership and intensity, underlining his importance in high-pressure matches. “The way he plays is exactly what we need in tough games. We have to be smart, nationally and internationally. I had to take him off because he was very emotional, and I wanted to finish the game with eleven players – but his emotion is what we need in big matches.”
