Morgan Gibbs-White to Spurs in jeopardy as Forest make official complaint

Spurs had already booked in medical for Morgan Gibbs-White, who has a £60m release clause, only for Nottingham Forest chiefs to now claim that an illegal approach was made for England midfielder

Nottingham Forest have made a complaint to the Premier League and are exploring taking legal action because they believe Tottenham Hotspur’s approach for Morgan Gibbs-White may have been illegal.

Spurs had pencilled in a medical for the England midfielder after deciding to trigger his £60m release clause but the move may now be in jeopardy with Forest writing a letter of complaint to their rival club and the league over an alleged illegal tapping of their captain.

The arrival of midfielder Gibbs-White, 25, would follow the £55m signing of Mohammed Kudus from West Ham and young Japan defender Kota Takai as Spurs look to build a squad capable of competing in both the Premier League and Champions League under new head coach Thomas Frank.

Forest are under no financial pressure to sell Gibbs-White, 25, having already sanctioned the £55m sale of Anthony Elanga to Newcastle earlier this week. Manchester City had also been weighing up a move only to cool their interest in the past fortnight.

Gibbs-White, whose Forest contract has two years remaining, moved to the City Ground from Wolves in August 2022 for an initial fee of £25m plus £17m in add-ons and Wolves stand to earn a 10 per cent cut from any profit made on his possible sale.

He was a key figure last season as Forest returned to Europe for the first time since 1995-96, scoring seven goals and providing eight assists in 34 league appearances.

But they fell out of the Champions League places late in the season and will instead participate in the Conference League.

Forest have already banked £16.8m from the departures of Ramon Sosa and Andrew Omobamidele to Palmeiras and Strasbourg. And the Brazilian forward Igor Jesus has been signed from Botafogo for £10m.
