Jose Mourinho is confident that Manchester City will be stripped of the 2017-18 Premier League trophy, with the title handed to the Special One’s Man Utd side of that season instead.

Mourinho managed United from 2016 to 2018, winning the EFL Cup and Europa League.

He also led United to second place in the Premier League in 2017-18, finishing 19 points behind champions Man City.

But Mourinho is confident that his Man Utd side from that season could yet be upgraded to champions if Man City are found guilty and punished in their current trial.

What did Mourinho say?

“As you know, we won the Europa League and we finished second in the Premier League,” Mourinho said.

“I think we still have a chance to win that league if they punish Man City. And then they have to pay me the bonus and give me the medal!”

Man City have been charged with 115 alleged financial breaches and an independent hearing has begun after a four-year investigation conducted by UEFA.

Man City have denied any wrongdoing, but the club have been accused of failing to provide accurate financial information from 2009 to 2018.

‘The Trial of the Century’ is expected to last around 10 weeks in total, although the independent board will then take time to come to a conclusion, while Man City will have the right to appeal the final decision.

The Cityzens have won eight Premier League titles and 24 trophies in total since the Abu Dhabi United Group purchased the club in 2008, spending over €2.5 billion on new players in the process.

However, they face the prospect of being relegated from the Premier League, and being stripped of titles – including the 2017-18 season Mourinho alludes to – if the trial results in a guilty verdict.
