Preußen Münster snatched a hard-fought draw against SC Paderborn.
The two teams had contrasting fortunes in the opening weekend of the 2. Bundesliga season. SC Paderborn got their reward in the 99th minute for a dominant performance against Holstein Kiel, while Preußen Münster lost to Karlsruhe by a goal scored in the 88th minute while they were reduced to ten men.
Niko Koulis, who was sent off with half an hour left in their 3-2 defeat at the BBBank Wildpark, is suspended for this one, and Alexander Ende made two more changes from that lineup. Meanwhile, Paderborn’s Ralf Kettemann went with the same XI that started the 2-1 win over Kiel.
Notably, both coaches had new signings on the bench. Paderborn brought former Borussia Dortmund striker Steffen Tigges a couple of days ago, while Jannis Heuer joined Münster yesterday to replace Antonio Tikvic, who, unfortunately, suffered an ACL injury on his debut last week.
The hosts had the first real chance of the game. Marco Meyerhöfer missed the target after a surging run from the right flank. However, they were a goal behind at the midpoint of the first-half in a move that started with Etienne Amenyido losing possession.
18-year-old midfielder Luis Engelns scored his first goal for Paderborn as Laurin Curda recorded his second assist in as many games. The guests controlled proceedings for the rest of the half, but they missed chances to extend their slender lead.
That proved costly for Padberborn. Münster made two half-time substitutions, and they showed clear signs of improvement early in the second-half. The equalizing goal finally arrived from the right-back Jano ter Horst in the 61st minute. Paderborn regained momentum after that, but they were unable to score a late goal in this one.
The young goalkeeper Johannes Schenk was the man of the match for the hosts with a couple of solid saves in the closing stage of the game. Münster’s next game will be against Hertha Berlin, but it’s in the first round of the cup instead of the 2. Bundesliga. Similarly, Paderborn will travel to Viktoria Köln in a Pokal action.
