Part of the shock of Liverpool‘s trophy parade crash was that it could have been anyone’s family or friends hurt.
My son and young granddaughter were in the city to witness what had been a joyous occasion and my first instinct when the news broke was to check they were alright.
After we spoke, I had this strange mix of personal relief my loved ones weren’t involved but a sickening feeling in my stomach that others were injured, some seriously.
New details were coming in when I was on air for a Monday evening radio show and I have to admit it was one of the hardest to do, because of the pain and the futility at that point of speculating how it had happened.
I’ve been on those parades both as a fan and later a player when 500,000 people turned up to greet us after winning three cups in 2001.
Monday’s gathering was even bigger than that, considerably so according to some reports, and it was one of the great days in the club’s history until the car ploughed into fans.
A car ploughed into a crowd of people after Liverpool’s trophy parade on Monday, with a 53-year-old white British man subsequently being arrested
Ex-Liverpool star Danny Murphy had family members at the parade, and felt sick as he worried that they could have been hit by the car
Police must find out what happened so that we never see anything like this again
So many people I, or anyone associated with the city of Liverpool, would have known people at the parade, or gone themselves.
It is absolutely horrible and will have affected everyone. Any of us could have known one of the victims.
Liverpool knows how to come together and put on a celebration. They also know how to come together after tragic events.
I know people who were in restaurants close to the crash scene. Tables were hurriedly put away so it became a place to shelter or even treat the injured.
We can only hope those still in hospital heal quickly and we find out what happened to avoid a repeat in the future.
