When Nadiem Amiri opened the scoring in Mainz’s 2-1 away defeat to Stuttgart on Sunday, he ran over to the home fans and celebrated in front of their stand.
In an Instagram post, the 29-year-old Mainz midfielder has now apologised for the incident.
“That was not appropriate in that situation. I want to apologise for this behavior,” he wrote.
Before Amiri’s goal, a Mainz supporter had been treated and resuscitated by paramedics for more than 20 minutes before being taken to hospital.
While the fan was being treated, both sets of supporters temporarily paused their cheering.
“At that moment, I was not aware of the extent of the situation, and my celebration in your direction was inappropriate,” Amiri said, praising the Stuttgart fans.
“You showed class and reacted with great sensitivity during the medical emergency in our block. I have the utmost respect for that.
“Above all, I wish the affected person all the best and a speedy recovery. My thoughts are with you,” he wrote.
