Although he’s unable to play due to an ankle injury, Germany captain Joshua Kimmich has traveled to Luxembourg with his teammates for Friday’s World Cup qualifier.

Speaking ahead of the game, Germany coach Julian Nagelsmann explained why he believes the 30-year-old can make an impact despite his injury.

“He still has the ability to lead the team, even when he’s not on the pitch,” Nagelsmann said at a press conference on Thursday.

The Bayern star can “exert influence” from the touchline, the coach emphasized “and he will.”

Nagelsmann added that he hopes Kimmich will be fit for Monday’s game against Slovakia.

“It’s not serious, he won’t be out for long. Hopefully, he’ll be available again on Monday,” the Germany coach said.

In Kimmich’s absence, his Bayern teammate Jonathan Tah will wear the captain’s armband on Friday.
