Napoli defender Sam Beukema has singled out teammate Scott McTominay as the standout player in Serie A, praising not only his performances on the pitch but also his character off it.

Speaking in an interview with the official Lega Serie A channels, via IlNapolista, Beukema offered a relaxed but revealing insight into his life in Naples, his football inspirations and the players who have impressed him most since arriving in Italy.

When asked to name the strongest current player in the league, the Dutch defender had no hesitation. “I have to say my friend Scott. He’s incredibly strong, and he’s also a great human being,” Beukema said, underlining the impact McTominay has made since joining Napoli.

Napoli defender Beukema: ‘Lookman is the toughest opponent I’ve faced’

Beukema also highlighted the challenges of defending in Serie A, naming Ademola Lookman as the toughest opponent he has faced. “He’s quick, annoying to play against, unpredictable, very strong,” he explained. Among defenders, he pointed to Alessandro Bastoni for his attacking quality, while also praising Gleison Bremer, fitness permitting.

Beyond individuals, Beukema spoke warmly about Napoli’s environment, describing the city as “unique”, head coach Antonio Conte as “charismatic”, and the atmosphere at the Maradona Stadium as “phenomenal”. Inside the dressing room, he identified Frank Anguissa as a quiet leader.

Reflecting on his development, Beukema credited former coach Vincenzo Italiano for a simple but lasting piece of advice: always be ready. That mentality, combined with the work done away from the spotlight, recovery, preparation and discipline, is what he believes is most underestimated in a footballer’s career.
