Neuer’s absence to open up World Cup possibilities for Urbig?

Should Urbig perform in Bayern’s upcoming games, the 22-year-old could be called up for Germany’s squad heading to the USA, Canada and Mexico in summer.

Based on Sport BILD’s reports, Manuel Neuer’s latest muscle fibre injury sustained last Saturday has opened a door of immense opportunity for Jonas Urbig.

Not only can Urbig further establish himself as Bayern Munich’s future first choice goalkeeper, but could now cast himself into the mix for the German national team.

Depending on Neuer’s recovery time, Urbig will be in goal against Eintracht Frankfurt, Borussia Dortmund and potentially Mönchengladbach and Bayer Leverkusen.

This would be a major opportunity to recommend himself to Julian Nagelsmann who is busy at work whittling down his squad for the 2026 World Cup next summer.

With Neuer insisting he won’t come out of international retirement and ter Stegen sidelined with injury, Oliver Baumann has made himself the current first choice thus far. 

Meanwhile, the likes of VfB Stuttgart’s Alexander Nübel, SC Freiburg’s Noah Atubolu and Finn Dahmen of FC Augsburg are further behind in the shot-stoppers pecking order. 

With good performances in the coming weeks for the Bavarian giants, 22-year-old Urbig could also firmly put himself in Nagelsmann’s goalkeeping plans for next summer.
