Erling Haaland has been offered a new Manchester City contract that would remove potential release clauses, but he has no intention of signing it according to a report.

Haaland became the quickest player ever to reach 50 Premier League goals when he scored for City in their 1-1 draw with Liverpool on Saturday, and he has long since made a mockery of the €60 million fee City paid Borussia Dortmund for his services the summer before last.

Haaland is under contract at the Etihad until June 2027, but his deal reportedly includes a release clause of €200m that activates the summer after next.

Haaland is currently the second best-paid player at the club on £375,000 per week, but City were keen to at least draw him level with top earner Kevin De Bruyne’s £400,000, in return for the player dropping the clause.

Haaland ‘in charge of his destiny’

“This is not happening at the moment, it’s that simple,” sources told TEAMtalk. “But it is not really something to be worried about for City, this is nothing against them and Haaland is not about to depart or even thinking about it.

“Haaland has just covered his options and wants to make sure he is always in charge of his own destiny.”

Haaland won the continental treble in his first season in Manchester but continues to be linked with an eventual transfer to Real Madrid.

Haaland and his father Alfie – a former Man City midfielder – formed a transfer matrix prior to his move to England, from which Real emerged as his second-favourite destination.

Real still had 2022 Ballon d’Or winner Karim Benzema on their books at the time, with Haaland wanting to be the undisputed No.9 at his next club, but that situation has changed with the Frenchman now in Saudi Arabia with Al-Ittihad.
