Newcastle have failed with a bid for Jorgen Strand Larsen as Wolves close in on the sale of Fabio Silva to Borussia Dortmund.

The Magpies are desperately scrambling to bring in striker reinforcements before the 1 September deadline amid Alexander Isak‘s ongoing push for a move to Liverpool.

Incidentally, Newcastle host the Reds on Monday evening in what promises to be a fiery clash, which will be attended by chairman Yasir Al-Rumayyan, who is the driver behind the Magpies’ not-for-sale stance on Isak.

Talks over the Sweden international are expected to really kick into gear again after the game, but Newcastle have no time to waste and are already active in the market before kick-off.

The St. James’ Park club have placed a bid worth around €58 million for Wolves striker Jorgen Strand Larsen, only to be told that the Norway international is unavailable this summer.

Newcastle to return with improved bid?

According to David Ornstein, Wolves are on the verge of an agreement with Borussia Dortmund to sell Fabio Silva for around €25 million, which would make them even less likely to sanction Strand Larsen’s departure.

Sky Sports reporter Keith Downie posits that Newcastle could perhaps make an improved bid for Strand Larsen, but this seems like an exercise in futility.

“For Newcastle, it feels very much at the moment like spinning plates,” Downie said. “We don’t yet know what is going to happen with Alexander Isak, whether he will remain a Newcastle United player or not, but they’re ensuring that they’re doing everything they can to get in replacements should he move to Liverpool.

“It will be interesting to see whether Newcastle go in with an improved bid for Strand Larsen – clearly, Eddie Howe is looking for striking reinforcements. They don’t want to overspend, though.

“I spoke to him just a couple of days ago in the build-up to this game. He said they don’t want to overspend, but they know they need strikers in because they’re playing not just in the Premier League this season but they’ve got a Champions League campaign to contend with as well.”
