Newcastle are aware that Liverpool defender Joe Gomez is exploring options after missing the Reds’ 2-0 win over Ipswich on Saturday.

The 27-year-old, who wants more regular starting opportunities and in his favoured centre-back position, was not included in Arne Slot‘s first Premier League matchday squad at Portman Road this weekend.

Jarell Quansah was given the nod at centre-half alongside Virgil van Dijk before being ruthlessly hooked by the Dutch manager for Ibrahima Konate at half time.

Mail Sport understands that Newcastle are now monitoring Gomez ahead of the summer transfer deadline, keen to bolster Eddie Howe‘s back line following a leaky Premier League campaign last season.

The Magpies made a fourth bid for Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi ahead of their home clash with Southampton on Saturday, improving their offer to close in on the Eagles’ £65million valuation.

It is understood the offer, which has been rejected by Palace, would have eclipsed the £60m fee paid for club record signing Alexander Isak.

Newcastle’s need for a new centre-back heightened after their hard-fought 1-0 win over Southampton at St James’ Park on Saturday, with Fabian Schar now suspended for three matches following his red card for headbutting striker Ben Brereton Diaz.

Howe claimed after the match that the Swiss centre-back was conned by Brereton Diaz, who theatrically fell to the floor after the pair touched heads.

His reaction was labelled ‘s***housery’ by Magpies legend Alan Shearer, with Howe also describing it as a ‘well managed situation’.

Gomez saw a potential £45m move to Newcastle United fall through last month as part of negotiations around the deal for Anthony Gordon.

Aston Villa, Fulham, Chelsea and foreign clubs have also shown an interest in the England international, who has 15 caps at international level and was included in Gareth Southgate’s 26-man Euro 2024 squad.

Gomez, currently Liverpool’s longest serving player, signed for the Reds from Charlton in 2015 for a fee of £3.5m and has since made 248 appearances
