Newcastle’s squad have come under fire after a video circulated on social media that appeared to show a young mascot left confused and ignored ahead of Saturday’s defeat by Liverpool.

The Magpies were well beaten 4-1 by the Reds at Anfield despite an impressive start to the game.

But it was a 55-second clip which proved to be a major talking point in the aftermath, with fans quick to hit out at Eddie Howe‘s side. The club have since pledged to look into the incident and rectify what went on.

In a post on X captioned: ‘Really, really bad from the lads & staff this. Poor little lass man,’ a young girl mascot for Newcastle was seen looking lost after both sets of players had conducted their pre-match handshake.

Newcastle’s stars had jogged off to go through their final preparations before kick off yet the girl was simply standing there and looking in the direction of her heroes, but unsure as to where to go.

The camera then panned to the opposite side of the pitch where Liverpool skipper Virgil van Dijk was passing a ball to his side’s three young mascots.

The Newcastle mascot then wandered on her own towards the halfway line, but it appeared that she didn’t know what to do as she looked around the ground and had her hands in her pockets.

A member of Liverpool’s club staff did seemingly encourage the young girl to go across to the Newcastle players yet she remained hesitant to do so.

The video then ended with the staff member being approached by the girl, who remained a notable distance away from Newcastle’s stars, although the clip does not show what happened after the players moved back into shot.

The Newcastle United Supporters’ Club added on X: ‘This is so disappointing to see. We will encourage the club to reach out to the young lass and her family to put it right.’

Several other fans echoed these thoughts as one said: ‘Poor that. Feel really sorry for the bairn (child), howay @NUFC sort this out.’

Another added: ‘Just another sign on how out of touch clubs and players are with their fanbases these days. No wonder so many feel disenfranchised with the game atm. Obv not personal to Newcastle, it’s widespread with many clubs…’

A further frustrated fan chimed in with: ‘Players, staff, officials and not least the photographer. Disappointed in my club here.’

Telegraph Sport reported that club officials were said to be unaware of the incident at the time, but they have since pledged to look into it and resolve what went on for the young girl.

The report added that Newcastle are also set to reach out to her family.

The defeat at Anfield continued the Magpies’ disappointing away form this season, with Howe’s side 10th in the Premier League and seven points off the top five.

They return to action on Wednesday when they travel to Man City in the second leg of their Carabao Cup semi-final, looking to overturn a 0-2 deficit from last month’s first leg.
