Newcastle United are set to light up St James’ Park tonight in a massive Champions League clash against Barcelona. The Magpies secured their spot at the top table of European football with a fifth-place finish last season under Eddie Howe’s leadership and are out to improve on their early exit from 2023.

Unlike their previous European stint, where they famously defeated Paris Saint-Germain on home turf, this time around they’ll face eight different opponents in the league phase. As luck would have it, they find themselves up against PSG again in their final game in January.

In between the two high-profile fixtures, Newcastle have matches against the likes of Benfica and Athletic Bilbao. Last season, 11 points was enough to earn teams a spot in the knockout phase play-offs, with 16 points good for a direct path through to the round of 16.

Several squad members will be experiencing the thrill of Champions League football at St James’ Park for the first time. Nick Woltemade is fresh from his goalscoring debut over the weekend and Anthony Elanga – who netted for Manchester United in the 2021/22 Champions League – will be eager to make his mark. There’s no Lamine Yamal for Barcelona, though, with the Ballon d’Or contender staying home to work on his fitness.

A sea of Newcastle fans will be flooding into the stadium or soaking up the electric atmosphere around St James’ Park. For those tuning in from home, here’s what you need to know.

What pundits have said about Newcastle United vs Barcelona?

Former Newcastle midfielder Didi Hamann, who lifted the Champions League trophy with Liverpool in 2005, believes Eddie Howe’s squad shouldn’t be dismissed. “Last season, Barcelona didn’t play an English team because PSG took all the English teams out,” Hamann told Racing Tipster.

“I think there’s every chance for Newcastle to get something out of the game, and obviously, the way Barcelona defend – they defend at the halfway line with the quick players Newcastle have now – I think there’s every chance to get something out of the game or even win it. The atmosphere will be electric. Champions League nights at St James’ are always something else. Can’t wait for this one.

“I think people are already writing Newcastle United off [for this season’s competition],” fellow Champions League winner David Beckham said on CBS Sports. “Newcastle are a good team, they have some good players. Very together as a team, as fans and as a club. They could surprise a few people.

“Barcelona visiting St James’ Park won’t be a walk in the park,” former Barcelona striker Sergio Aguero warned on Stake.com. “One can never underestimate a rival in the Champions League, for one, and then you’ve got to remember that no single match will seal a team’s fate in the new system.

“They will have to work exceptionally hard to match Barcelona, and Barca will have most of the ball,” former Newcastle midfielder Geremi cautioned on BestBettingSites.co.uk. “They will have to stay compact and work together as a team to avoid conceding. They can definitely win, but let’s see how it works out.”
