Anelka, who scored 125 goals in 364 Premier League appearances with four different clubs, has been out of football since leaving his role as sporting director at French amateur side Hyeres three years ago.

The former France international has previous experience of Turkish football, having played for Fenerbahce in the 2005-06 season.

His role at Umraniyespor will present an altogether different challenge for the former Bolton, Arsenal and Chelsea striker.

The Istanbul-based club were relegated to the Turkish second division last season after finishing 17th out of 19 teams in the Turkish Super Lig.

And their life in the second tier of Turkish football hasn’t started brilliantly either, with Umraniyespor 12th on the table after picking up just 23 points from their first 19 league games.
