Nine players could miss Liverpool vs Crystal Palace

Liverpool will be desperate to return to winning ways when they host Crystal Palace in the Carabao Cup, but Arne Slot could be without a number of star names

As many as nine players could miss Liverpool’s clash against Crystal Palace in the Carabao Cup tonight. The Reds will be desperate to get back on track after a string of disappointing results.

Liverpool have lost five of their last six games, including defeats to Crystal Palace, Chelsea, Manchester United and Brentford in the Premier League, as well as Galatasaray in the Champions League. Despite splashing out nearly £450m on signings in the summer, the Merseyside outfit have failed to impress so far this season.

Arne Slot is feeling the heat, and he’ll be hoping a cup run could turn things around. However, Liverpool’s task has been made harder with several key players potentially missing the match.

Alisson Becker, Jeremie Frimpong and Giovanni Leoni have all been ruled out due to injury, while Ryan Gravenberch and Alexander Isak are doubtful after missing the weekend’s 3-2 defeat to Brentford with ankle and groin injuries, respectively.

Curtis Jones’ availability is also in question after he requested a substitution during the second half at the G-Tech Community Stadium. On a positive note, Hugo Ekitike will be available for selection, having already served his one-match ban for a red card picked up in the previous round.

Keen to concentrate on addressing his team’s dismal run of form, Slot said: “Of course, we have already faced Palace in the Premier League this season, and the result on that occasion was not what we would have hoped for.

“Credit to Palace for that. Their winning goal came very late on that occasion after we had equalised following a difficult first half for us, so we should be aware not just of the problems they can cause but also of their ability to keep going until the final whistle.”

Slot confirmed he would make a late call on team selection, adding: “At the time of writing these notes, I have not made a final decision on the squad that we will use for this game – there is a need to train and to check on availability – but whichever players we use have to be ready to face a team like Palace.”

As for Palace, Cheick Doucoure and Caleb Kporha remain sidelined. Chadi Riad is also ruled out, though he’s anticipated to soon return to training after an extended period out with a knee problem.

Speaking on Tuesday, Glasner confirmed that Walter Benitez and Jaydee Canvo will both start at Anfield on Wednesday night. The Palace manager also disclosed that Chris Richards will miss out on the matchday squad after picking up a minor calf problem during the weekend’s clash with Arsenal.

“It’s not a gift – they deserve it,” said Glasner. “Jaydee, I spoke to him and said I don’t care about [his error against Larnaca last week], it’s part of football. He won a lot of duels, and he’s doing well in training.

“We trust him, and that’s why he will start tomorrow in the back three. Walter is the same. He’s doing so well in training, and he deserves to get some minutes as well.”
