After an impressive 4–0 victory over Borussia Mönchengladbach last week, Werder Bremen were brought back down to earth with a 0–3 loss to SC Freiburg on Saturday.

Still working on his return to top form, Bayer Leverkusen loanee Victor Boniface was brought on after about an hour, but he didn’t have the impact that Werder coach Horst Steffen had hoped for.

“For me, it was too much ‘everywhere,’” Steffen said of Boniface’s performance in a post-match interview.

“He needs to stay more central. It was not how I wanted it.”

It wasn’t just Boniface who failed to follow instructions, however.

“There were many players who didn’t stay in their zones. We need to stick to positions in order to create overloads from time to time. That’s something I’ll address,” he said.

Captain Marco Friedl was equally candid after the defeat.

“We fully deserved to lose because we lacked everything and played poorly. You can’t beat any team like that, and certainly not Freiburg. We basically gifted them the three goals,” he fumed.
