The former Real Madrid man picked up on international duty, meaning he is certain to miss the Gunner’s match against rivals Tottenham at the weekend.

While playing for Norway during the second half of their Nations League win over Austria in Oslo on Monday night, he rolled his ankle. Odegaard needed help leaving the pitch and appeared to weep as he did so.

Norway’s national team doctor Ola Sand has informed publication VG about the injury, saying that Odegaard could well be out for three weeks or longer.

Sand explained: “Such ankle injuries often take at least three weeks. Anything other than that is just a bonus. And then it can take longer.”

National team boss Stale Solbakken also spoke about Odegaard’s injury.

“It is difficult for us if we are going to play without Martin, considering that it is Slovenia at home and Austria away.

“He is probably the one who has been the least injured of those who are completely bombproof in the eleven under me.”

It means that Odegaard could miss Arsenal’s Champions League game against Atalanta and their Premier League match against champions Manchester City too.

Arsenal Odegaard’s injury is a concern as it leaves Mikel Arteta without three of his first-choice midfielders for their contest against the Lilywhites.

Their summer signing Mikel Merino fractured his shoulder in his first training session for the club. He won’t be available until October at least. England international Declan Rice is suspended due to his dismissal against Brighton.
