Ange Postecoglou has been sacked by Nottingham Forest after just eight games in charge.

The Australian has been relieved of his duties after becoming the first head coach in club history to not win any of his first eight games at the helm. On Saturday, Postecoglou saw his side fall to a 3-0 home defeat against Chelsea.

The 60-year-old, who was sacked by Tottenham in the summer after a strange season in which he won the Europa League but finished 17th domestically, failed to improve Forest’s fortunes in his brief time in charge.

Postecoglou was not helped by the fact that his predecessor, Nuno Espirito Santo, a hugely popular figure, was only sacked due to a row with owner Evangelos Marinakis and club director Edu.

Forest fans never really took the new boss and were singing ‘you’re getting sacked in the morning’ during a 3-2 defeat to Midtjylland prior to the recent international break.

Postecoglou sets unwanted record

Forest owner Marinakis informed Postecoglou of his dismissal immediately after the loss to Chelsea. Brief goodbyes ensued before the sacked manager left the City Ground.

The Australian was only in charge of Forest for a scarcely believable 39 days, making his reign the shortest of any permanent manager in Premier League history. The previous record was 40 days, held by Les Reed, who had an ill-fated stint at Charlton Athletic in late 2006.

Despite Postecoglou’s close relationship with Marinakis, which helped him get the job in the first place, there now appears to be no love lost between the two. Forest did not even thank Postecoglou for his services when his dismissal was announced.

“Nottingham Forest Football Club can confirm that after a series of disappointing results and performances, Ange Postecoglou has been relieved of his duties as head coach with immediate effect. The club will make no further comment at this time,” a succinct statement read.
