OFFICIAL: Chelsea charged with 74 breaches of FA regulations

The Football Association have officially charged Chelsea with 74 breaches of several regulations during Roman Abramovich’s era as the club’s owner.

The Blues have been charged due to alleged breaches related to agents, intermediaries and third party investments between 2009 and 2022, although the reported infringements primarily took place from 2010-11 until 2015-16.

An official statement released by The FA read: “The Football Association has today charged Chelsea FC with breaches of Regulations J1 and C2 of The FA Football Agents Regulations, Regulations A2 and A3 of The FA Regulations on Working with Intermediaries, and Regulations A1 and B3 of The FA Third Party Investment in Players Regulations.

“In total, 74 charges have been brought against Chelsea FC. The conduct that is the subject of the charges ranges from 2009 to 2022 and primarily relates to events which occurred between the 2010/11 to 2015/16 playing seasons.

“Chelsea FC has until 19 September 2025 to respond.”

During that time period, Chelsea signed the likes of Juan Mata, Thibaut Courtois, Gary Cahill, Eden Hazard, Cesar Azpilicueta, Willian, Diego Costa and Cesc Fabregas, all of whom enjoyed hugely successful careers at Stamford Bridge.

How could Chelsea be punished?

It is currently unknown how Chelsea may be punished if they are unable to provide a successful response to The FA’s charges.

A fine is the most likely punishment, however Chelsea could feasibly be docked points or handed a transfer ban. However, official confirmation regarding their punishment has not yet been disclosed by The FA.

It also remains to be seen how Chelsea breached the aforementioned regulations and what players, agents, intermediaries and third parties were involved.

Chelsea have been given eight days to respond to the charges handed out by The FA.
