The former England international’s Manchester United nightmare is over. Sancho left Old Trafford for Stamford Bridge on an 11th-hour Deadline Day loan deal that has now, belatedly, been announced.

The 24-year-old, who had been keen to leave Man Utd after once again finding himself on the outside looking in, has joined Chelsea on an initial loan that is almost guaranteed to become permanent for €25 million to €30m next summer. The west London side will automatically sign Sancho long-term if they finish higher than 15th in the Premier League.

Last September, Sancho publically snapped back at Man Utd boss Erik ten Hag after he questioned his training performance and, despite a supposed rapprochement earlier this summer, this incident clearly broke their relationship beyond repair. The player did not feature in either of the Red Devils’ opening Premier League fixtures.

Speculation surrounding the future of Sancho had been rampant, with Juventus also trying to sign the former €85 million man. In the end, however, the Blues have won out, securing a loan deal with an obligation to purchase the attacker.

Sancho joins Chelsea in simple deal

Initially, talks between Chelsea and Man Utd had focused on a swap deal with Raheem Sterling. The winger had been told by coach Enzo Maresca that he had no future at the club and would have been open to moving back to Manchester.

However, the former Man City and Liverpool winger first wanted to sort out his contract details with Chelsea, with the player due to still be paid an exorbitant sum of money.

DEADLINE DAY: Every confirmed transfer around Europe

Ultimately, a move was not attractive for Man Utd, who had only wanted to sign Sterling on an affordable deal, viewing the player as a potential ‘market opportunity.’ The 29-year-old nevertheless completed a Deadline Day move, joining Arsenal.

As far as Sancho is concerned, no swap deal materialised and he has moved to west London on a loan deal. It now remains to be seen whether the 24-year-old can revive his career in the chaotic Chelsea environment or whether his dramatic fall from grace will continue.
