Salford City have completed the signing of former Premier League and Serie A striker Fabio Borini on a short-term deal until January.

The 34-year-old, a free agent since leaving Sampdoria in the summer, has been training with the team over the past month. His signing comes after an injury to forward Jay Bird, leaving the League Two club short of attacking options.

Borini brings a wealth of experience from an impressive career that has included spells with Roma, Liverpool, Sunderland, and AC Milan, as well as representing Italy at both Under-21 and senior level, reaching the finals of the European Championships with both squads.

Borini drawn to Salford project

Speaking after putting pen to paper, via Salford’s official website, Borini said he was drawn to the project and atmosphere at Salford:

“It’s been great, I came in to train to keep myself fit in this transition between contracts and Salford, the Gaffer, and Alex Bruce were kind enough to allow me to train here. Experience is something I can bring – on and off the pitch – but I’m also here to learn about League Two football from my teammates.”

Borini added that the move reignited his passion for the game:

“It’s a challenge that I’m embracing because I needed real football – something that warms my heart for football, not for anything else.”

Following FA, EFL and international clearance, Borini is now eligible for selection and will wear the number 16 shirt for Salford.
