Inter have officially confirmed that the club and head coach Simone Inzaghi have decided to go their separate ways through a mutual agreement following the team’s 5-0 loss to Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League final on Saturday night.
Inzaghi, who was appointed Inter head coach exactly four years ago today, has decided to leave the club in order to join Saudi Pro League side Al-Hilal.
It is expected that the 49-year-old will be in charge of his new club in time for the start of the FIFA Club World Cup, with his first match expected to fall against Real Madrid on June 18.
Official: Inter confirm Inzaghi departure
“The paths of the club and Simone Inzaghi separate,” a statement on the club website read. “This decision is taken via a mutual agreement after the meeting that took place a few moments ago.”
“Inzaghi’s management of Inter will be remembered for his great passion, professionalism and dedication by fans, players, directors and employees.
“Six trophies; a Scudetto, two Coppa Italias and three Super Cups are the honours earned over the last four seasons, which have brought the club back to the top of Italian and European football.
“Inzaghi is one of the coaches with the most games in the history of the Nerazzurri, along with other illustrious names including Herrera, Mancini, Trapattoni and Mourinho.
“Just like the other members of this exclusive group, Inzaghi has contributed significantly to Inter’s growth and will forever go down in history as the coach who led us to the second star.”
Marotta comments on Inzaghi departure
Nerazzurri President Beppe Marotta has also provided a brief statement following Inzaghi’s decision to leave the club.
“On behalf of our shareholder, Oaktree, and the whole club, I would like to thank Simone Inzaghi for the work he has done, for the passion shown and for the sincerity in today’s discussion, which led to the mutual decision to part ways,” Marotta said.
“It is only when we have fought together to achieve success day by day that we can have a frank dialogue like the one that happened today.”
Inzaghi’s decision to leave has Inter now looking for a new head coach of their own, with initial reports suggesting that Cesc Fabregas, Cristian Chivu, Patrick Vieira and Roberto De Zerbi are among the first-choices.
