Raheem Sterling has made the shock decision to sign for Dutch side Feyenoord on a free transfer after leaving Chelsea last month.
Sterling had the remaining 18 months of his contract terminated by the Blues in January, having not played for the club since 2024, with Chelsea desperate to get rid of their highest earner from their wage books.
The 31-year-old had reportedly been hoping to stay in London but Feyenoord have now confirmed Sterling’s arrival until the end of the season, with the winger saying: “As a free agent, I’ve had, for the first time in a long time, the opportunity to control the next step in my career.
“I wanted to take my time to speak with clubs and their head coaches to better understand the role they envisioned for me and ensure that I can add real value in this next chapter.
“Having spoken in great detail with Robin van Persie, I’m confident that Feyenoord is a place I can be happy and establish myself as a valued member of the team.
“Playing abroad is a whole new challenge for me – and one I’m ready to embrace. Honestly, I’m just excited to get started.”
Sterling rejects 18 clubs to join Feyenoord
Sterling had been relegated to Chelsea’s ‘bomb squad’, which saw him forced to train alone, having gone on loan to Arsenal last season after a similar situation the previous summer.
The ex-Liverpool star is believed to have rejected moves abroad previously in order to stay closer to his family in London but, according to transfer reporter Ben Jacobs, Sterling had 18 approaches and chose Feyenoord as his next destination.
Feyenoord are believed to have wanted to tie Sterling down to a longer contract but the player was keen on a short-term deal first in order to recapture his ‘joy’ for football, according to Jacobs.
The Dutch side are second in the Eredivisie and Sterling will be hoping to make a significant impact on their season despite having not played a senior match since May of last year.
