Official: RB Leipzig sign French centre-back

RB Leipzig have confirmed the signing of Abdoul Koné from Stade de Reims.

20-year-old French centre-back Abdoul Koné has joined RB Leipzig on a long-term contract running until 2031.

Die Roten Bullen confirmed the signing on Thursday, noting that Koné will spend the remainder of the season on loan at his current club, Stade Reims, in France’s Ligue 2.

RB Leipzig managing director for sport Marcel Schäfer revealed that the club beat “strong competition” to sign the centre-back.

“We’re delighted to have signed Abdoul at this early stage despite strong competition and to have added a real talent in the centre-back position,” said Schäfer. 

“He’s a tall, physical defender with real strength in duels and in the air, combined with exceptional pace over longer distances. Abdoul is also very composed in possession, enjoys being involved in build-up play, and brings a consistently high level of intensity. Thanks to his profile, he can also operate on the right side of defence. He will finish this season in Reims, continue his development there, and then join us in the summer.”

Koné commented on the move:
