VfL Wolfsburg officially confirmed this evening that Paul Simonis has been relieved of his duties and released from his contract with immediate effect.

Rumours emerged earlier this afternoon that the Dutchman’s time was coming to an end. Assistants Peter van der Veen, Tristan Berghuis and Martin Darneviel have also left the club.

“In football, results and points are what ultimately count, and the developments of the last few weeks have not gone as we all hoped.

“After intensive discussions with the supervisory board, we have come to the conclusion that a change is now needed to bring stability and success to the pitch.

“We all bear responsibility for the current situation – the sporting management, the coaching staff, the players, and the entire club,” said managing director Peter Christiansen.

After twelve games, the team’s points-per-game average under his rein was 0.92. Wolfsburg will are now use the international break to restructure their coaching staff.
